Husky Mix Saves 6-Year-Old Boy From Charging Bear in Connecticut Backyard
It is a split-second nightmare for any parent. One minute, you are packing up the car for a holiday weekend; the next, a massive black bear is sprinting full-speed down your driveway directly toward your child.
That heart-stopping scenario became a reality for Connecticut father Jeffrey Tazzara as his family prepared to leave for a Fourth of July party. But before the wild animal could reach his 6-year-old son, the family’s loyal husky mix, Bella, pulled off a stunning act of bravery - proving exactly why dogs are our greatest protectors.
A Terrifying Encounter Caught on Camera
The entire intense encounter was captured on the Tazzara family’s home security system and distributed by Storyful.
In the video, the young boy is seen standing in the driveway when a black bear suddenly emerges, charging toward him at a remarkably high speed. As the boy realizes what's happening and begins to back away in terror, Bella the husky mix dashes across the yard from the opposite side.
Without a shred of hesitation, Bella throws herself directly into the path of danger, circling around the bear to place her own body between the predator and the young boy.
The Ultimate Defense: A Bite to the Rear
Speaking with ABC News, Jeffrey Tazzara recalled hearing an unusual sound right before the confrontation.
"A vicious bark, not like she barks and yips and howls and stuff... this was a different kind of bark," Tazzara recounted.
When he looked up, he saw Bella completely shutting down the bear's momentum. In fact, Bella didn't just stand her ground - she went on the offensive.
"Bella finally caught up to the bear, like right in the middle of the driveway, and she bit it in the rear end, and the bear ended up crashing into my boat, and then I think [it] scurried under the boat and then through the back between the houses and into the woods," he said.
The startled bear, completely caught off guard by the fierce dog, lost control and crashed into a boat parked in the driveway. The animal then scurried underneath the boat before fleeing through the neighborhood and back into the safety of the woods.
A Steak Dinner for a Hometown Hero
Bella has rightfully earned the title of a total hero, though her owner notes she already lives an incredible life.
"She lives the life probably that most dogs wish they had. She's never, never been on a leash in her life," he said.
He added, "She just, she does what she wants. She gets tons of treats."
But for an act of bravery this massive, standard treats won't cut it. Tazzara plans to reward Bella with her very own steak at the family's next steak night.
Connecticut’s Growing Bear Population
According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the state's black bear population has been steadily growing over the past several decades, leading to a rise in residential sightings.
"The mere presence of a bear does not necessitate its removal. In most cases, if left alone, the bear will make its way to a more natural habitat," State wildlife officials state, adding that "removing food attractants, such as bird feeders, reduces the chance that bears will go near homes."
If you ever find yourself facing a black bear, experts recommend these four steps:
Observe from a distance: Do not approach the animal.
Advertise your presence: Shout, wave your arms, and walk slowly away.
Never feed them: Do not attempt to feed or attract bears under any circumstances.
Report it: Let local wildlife officials know about the sighting.
For the Tazzara family, a terrifying holiday weekend turned into a testament to their dog's unwavering loyalty. Watch the home security footage at the top of this page to see Bella's incredible, split-second rescue in real-time.
